1. Explore the Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse Innsbruck Old Town
Morning:
After breakfast, start your morning by arriving at the Innsbruck Old Town. Appreciate the colorful old-town charm as you sightsee the historic landmarks nearby. This is one of the free things to do in Innsbruck you can’t miss!
Travel Tip: Plan to arrive/be dropped off here (photo above) or in the surrounding area , as all the sites we visited are walkable from here. There is already a lot to explore in the vicinity. All the images I will share below are within walking distance of this place.

2. Stroll to the famous Innsbruck spot and appreciate the view at Inn Bridge
If you’re wondering what to see in Innsbruck in 1 day for free? This is the iconic and amazing scenery that’s a must-see when visiting Innsbruck!
One of the top things to do in Innsbruck in one day, and another option you can do in the morning is to see and photograph the adorable houses behind the Inn River, and the bridge! It’s beautiful to walk around here and take some photos!
Must know: This is only a short walk (3-5 mins) from the Old Town.

3. Wander through Maria Theresien Street
Mid- Morning / Before Lunch
If you like walking and exploring by foot, head to Maria Therese Street before lunch to do a bit of shopping, or if you’re into exploring unique stores and cafes, you’d want to spend a bit of your time here.
Another must-do and one of the things to do in Innsbruck in one day is visiting Maria Theresien Street, which is a short walk from the Old Town.
4. Take photos of the brightly colorful buildings
There are restaurants and places to eat around this area of the Old Town.
Don’t forget to enjoy and take pictures as you stroll around the adorable buildings in the Old Town surroundings. If you travel for food, consider adding a walking food tour in your one day in Innsbruck itinerary.

Travel Tip: You can find many places to have lunch here in this area. If you’re traveling on a budget or short on time and want something quick and just grab and go, there’s McDonalds as seen behind me in this photo.

5. Discover the Golden Roof
Afternoon
One of the unique things to do in Innsbruck is sightseeing its historic landmarks.
See Innsbruck’s stunning golden roof. The Golden Roof is covered with thousands of gilded copper tiles. Historically, it was constructed as a royal viewing balcony from which the emperor could observe public events in the square below, such as festivals and competitions.
Must-Know: This is located just right in front of the City Tower (Stadtturm).
It is free for viewing from the square. You can learn more about the historical interiors and see the museum inside.
Travel Tip: Save money with the Innsbruck: City Card, which includes one-time admission to many of the best museums, sights, attractions, some cable cars, bikes, and a shuttle bus of the city.

6. Enjoy the rooftop view from the City Tower (Stadtturm)

Consider climbing the City Tower (Stadtturm) to reach the top and enjoy spectacular views of the colorful buildings and the Inn River.
We didn’t climb to the top since we were still in pain from walking so many miles on our Europe trip. However, based on research, it’s one of the best things to do in Innsbruck, offering visitors panoramic views of the city.
Travel Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll need to climb the narrow stairs since there’s no elevator.

7. Admire the Helbinghaus
Want to see an “icing-like on a wedding cake” building? Stop by and observe the exterior front work. Doesn’t it look like a wedding cake?
One of the historic Innsbruck attractions is Helbling House. As you take a more leisurely stroll around the area, you’ll see its lovely façade. Many people stop here to take pictures and see the beautiful window frames, shells, and floral patterns that cover the exterior.
Must-know: It’s a building located in the Old Town (Altstadt). It’s only steps from the Golden Roof. No museum inside.
8. Appreciate serenity at Spitalskirche (Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit)
If you need a welcoming and peaceful space for prayer or are simply curious to visit, Spitalskirche (Hospital Church) is one of the things to do in Innsbruck Austria to add to your Innsbruck itinerary in one day.
Must-know: It’s located on Maria-Theresien-Straße near the start of Innsbruck’s main street. If you’re into visiting different churches around the world, you’ll appreciate its beautiful altar, religious ceilings, and figures on the walls.
9. Find and shop for Austrian souvenirs
Explore local souvenir shops to find a variety of classic Austrian magnets,gifts, and keepsakes. Browse through multiple traditional crafts, wood carvings, and local culinary gifts.
You can also find unique things to see, like little traditional items and traacht accessories.
I bought an Austria keychain and magnet as souvenirs during my one day in Innsbruck.
Travel Tip: I heard most shops are closed on Sundays, so plan your visit on a weekday or Saturday if you’d like to see most of Innsbruck’s local stores.
10. Visit Hofburg
See one of the most important palace sights in Innsbruck, Hofburg. It’s located in the Old Town.
If you’re interested in visiting and want to learn more about the Habsburg history, consider The Innsbruck Card since it includes a free entry and will save you money, especially if you plan to visit multiple attractions during your one day in Innsbruck.
11. Explore Austrian shopping stores and cafe/bar
Take a look around the colorful buildings and go inside the store if something interests you. Consider purchasing locally if you travel to shop or are looking for unique or high-quality items that you can’t normally find anywhere else.

Where to eat in Innsbruck
If you’re looking for a place to eat, Piano Cafe Bar Restaurant has great reviews and is recommended by tourists when visiting Innsbruck. It’s located just steps away from the Golden Roof, as seen in this photo I took. It’s a busy restaurant. So please plan your visit in advance.
12. Taste some traditional Austrian flavored ice cream
Austrian ice cream contains local ingredients and flavors. So, it’s worth trying.
Traditional ice cream can be found at local cafés along Maria-Theresien-Strass that serve unique Austrian flavors.
Mozartkugel-inspired, kardinalschnitten or sachertorte flavors, strudel flavors, nut varieties, and chestnut (maroni) are some of the traditional Austrian flavors to try.
Travel Tip: Politely ask if they give a sample taste. Try a bit of the sample first before choosing what to get.
13. Watch a Tyrolean folk show
