Best One Day in Venice Itinerary
Morning in Venice
Gondola Ride

After breakfast, begin your unforgettable one day in Venice on a Gondola Ride in the morning for a more peaceful experience due to fewer crowds. It’s a great start to get an early introduction to the most scenic and atmospheric experience in Venice.
Based on my experience, it’s ideal to begin your gondola ride before 10:00 am for a quieter atmosphere and less tourist traffic. If you’re traveling in the summer, as I did, it’s an ideal time because of the cooler morning weather.
For a more romantic experience, especially for couples, I recommend a gondola ride at sunset for the best photos and an evening/night gondola ride for stunning reflections of lights on canals. Keep in mind that if choosing this time, there may be limited visibility for photos.
Want your once-in-a-lifetime experience professionally captured in a private gondola?
Enjoy the scenery as a photographer capture your moment!
Travel Tips:
- Shared gondola is cheaper. Gondolas are priced PER RIDE (~€80 – €100 up to 5 passengers). Not per person.
- Peaceful ride (less crowd/tourist traffic) between 08:00-10:00am + cooler weather (ideal in the summer)
- Book in advance, especially if traveling (May-Sept).

Visit Church of Saint Moses (Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Moisè)
This area is a popular stop for gondola rides. San Moisè is free to visit, but a small donation is appreciated.
Make a quick stop at a beautiful church nearby after enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime gondola ride. It’s famous for its stunningly elaborate Baroque facade (theatrical design). The church is dedicated to Moses, honoring the Old Testament prophet as a saint.
It’s located in the San Marco district near the famous Piazza San Marco.
Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square)
From the Church of Saint Moses, enjoy a short and scenic walk to the Basilica and main square. This is where tourists mostly go, so it can get pretty crowded.
As you arrive at the main square, you’ll find Piazza San Marco, the heart of Venice, described as the most beautiful dining room in Europe. The lovely square is one of the free things to do in Venice in a day.
Enjoy a stroll around and take photos of the surroundings before going to popular tours nearby!
Alternative (one of the free things to do in Venice)
- Visit Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
St. Mark’s Campanile
The tallest building in Venice is the St. Mark’s Campanile (behind me in orange). It’s an iconic structure and a famous landmark seen in St. Mark’s Square with an elevator to the top.
Want to see a stunning 360° panoramic view of the city from the Bell Tower? You can go to the top!
It’s best to go and see the scenery early in the morning or at sunset. Purchase tickets early to skip long waits.
The square is also surrounded by major historic landmarks, including St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace (behind the bell tower).
St. Mark’s Square Experience

My honest travel experience at St Mark’s Square: Birds flew close to my face even when I didn’t have any food with me, and just walking normally on my own in the square.
After my sister bought food nearby, she met us in the middle of the square. Then, as soon as she was about to eat it, the birds aggressively took her food and flew away.
Know Before You Go ~ Be careful of birds at St. Mark’s Square!
- Do NOT carry food/snacks in your hands or bags (that are visible).
- Avoid street vendors offering bird feed, as it’s illegal.
- Try to go early in the morning if you can, for both fewer birds and fewer people.
(The other side view of) Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square)
St. Mark’s Basilica
See one of Venice’s most beautiful and famous churches, St. Mark’s Basilica, located in St. Mark’s Square, with a rooftop terrace view.
It’s next to Doge’s Palace, so it’s easier to combine your visit during your one day in Venice.
Know Before You Go:
- Bring a sweater or scarf and wear a long dress to cover your shoulders and knees.
- The terrace and museum require separate tickets.
- Large bags are not allowed. Pack light.
Short on time? Avoid long lines.
Reserve skip the line tickets to save time and maximize your one day in Venice itinerary.
Book your experience:
Doge’s Palace
After St. Mark’s Basilica, visit Doge’s Palace right after, since they’re next to each other.
Explore the historic and impressive paintings, staircases, and rooms inside. Remember to look up at the ceilings above you and walk across the Bridge of Sighs.
Know Before You Go
Experience the ambience and surroundings with a guided tour or explore at your own pace on an audio tour using your mobile phone. (remember to bring your headphones/earphones)
Book skip-the-line tickets since lines get long. To avoid it, go early in the morning or late afternoon.
Afternoon in Venice
Lunch at St. Mark’s Square

Travelers can enjoy historic cafes/restaurants like Caffe Florian at St. Mark’s Square, but please be aware that it can be pricey as you’re paying for the location and view. However, if you want to experience the Venetian ambience with music and really want to try the food here, you may find it worth it.
Lunch NEAR St. Mark’s Square
Where to eat in Venice?
Ristorante La Piazza is located just within walking distance (a few minutes) from St. Mark’s Square. It’s famous for its authentic Venetian ambiance and is a favorite among visitors who want to eat close to the square without feeling like they’re in a “tourist trap” like some nearby cafes.
My honest travel experience: Since I’ve always enjoyed seafood and squid ink pasta in the U.S, I’ve always wanted to try some in Venice because I heard they’re famously known for those kinds of pastas ~even better “fresh”! I was so thankful for the experience! Pastas were so delicious and worth trying ~ definitely must-try when traveling to Venice in one day!
If you’re looking for traditional Venetian & Italian (Seafood, Pasta, Pizza) with historic vibes and a welcoming atmosphere, this is the best place to go ~ La Piazza.
The squid ink pasta (spaghetti al nero di seppia) shown on the table is one of their signature dishes, and it’s one of the most-reviewed and recommended on their menu. Besides the squid ink pasta, try their fresh seafood pasta and seafood platters during your one day in Venice!
Travel tips:
- Save time and visit after your tours at St. Mark’s Square, as it’s only a few minutes’ walk.
- Please reserve a table in advance, as it can get very busy and may have long lines, particularly on weekends!
Rialto Bridge

Don’t forget to see and photograph the top viewpoint of the Rialto Bridge. This is where the classic Venice postcard is taken, and the famous canal photos tourists wait and line up for!

Even if it’s a bit crowded, the view is absolutely worth seeing! The surroundings with shops, restaurants, and markets were so picturesque that I remember feeling like I was in the movies while walking around here.
Appreciate the scenery and photo opportunities on top of the Rialto Bridge!
Know before you go:
- Be careful of pickpockets.
- Try to stand on the bridge’s outer edges for unhindered views if you’re visiting during peak hours (mid-day)
- Visit at sunset for better lighting and great photography.
Venice Travel Tips:
- Make a quick visit to the nearby historic Rialto Market.
- Eating near the bridge can be expensive, but if you prefer the view, it may be worth it as you’re paying for the location. If traveling on a budget or looking for better prices and food, you can walk five to ten minutes away to eat nearby.
Explore Venice by foot
(on your own or book an afternoon sightseeing tour)
See more scenic grand canals by foot during your one day in Venice.
Wandering through Venice’s serene canals, lovely bridges, and surprising photo locations is one of the city’s best experiences!
Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto
Sightsee more Venetian churches as you explore Venice by foot.
Know Before You Plan
You can create your own step-by-step walking route, including the most scenic and popular route, but be aware that GPS can lag or be misleading. You may get lost.
If you prefer, book a walking tour with a local expert guide so you don’t have to worry about navigating on your own and can save time being guided to see Venice’s monuments and hidden gems. It’s also a great introduction and way to learn the history of Venice, its islands, and attractions.
Alternative
Try some Dolci tipici di Venezia
Have a sweet tooth or just love trying local delicacies? Taste some Venetian pastries!
Dolci tipici di Venezia means traditional Venetian pastries, biscuits, and cakes!
You’ll likely see dessert shops along the way during your one day in venice exploration, so make a quick stop to try some sweets/desserts of Venice as snacks.
Late Afternoon Before Sunset
Church of San Giorgio Maggiore
What you should not miss to add to your Venice in one day itinerary is sightseeing and photographing some of Venice’s Instagrammable spots.
Before sunset, while waiting for our water taxi tour, we had to go back to St. Mark’s Square and got to discover one of Venice’s best photo spots at the square’s waterfront.
See the amazing view of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore from St. Mark’s Square.
Keep walking at the end of Doge’s Palace until you see the waterfront. Continue walking on your left side to see Venice’s parked gondolas along the shore.
It’s a great spot to capture travel photos and appreciate the beautiful scenery!
There’s also a lovely bridge where you can wander along and sightsee Venice’s stunning coastline while taking in the breathtaking views of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore.
Evening in Venice
Explore Venice by boat
Take a water taxi tour around Venice to see the city’s stunning skyline! It’s the fastest, most luxurious, and private way to see the city.
Enjoy sunset and the best picturesque route on a speed boat!
My best experience in Venice was definitely cruising on a private water taxi around the scenic route!
Travel Tip:
- Go on a sunset ride or quick trip to Church of San Giorgio Maggiore
My honest experience: Surprisingly, this was my favorite experience in Venice! I really enjoyed the delightful breeze as I took in the breathtaking scenery of the city that’s right in front of me.
I truly felt like I was in those romantic action movies.
There’s something unique about the wind blowing and cruising along the picturesque view.
I remember the cool breeze on my face and the wind blowing through my hair as the most amazing and unforgettable sensory experience I truly loved. It made me feel connected and appreciate the city even more as the experience gave me a sense of freedom, joy, and peace.
I felt I got to see and know more of the city than on the gondola ride.
Book your experience:
Know Before You Go
- Gondola is a classic experience. It’s best for small canals and a slow and romantic atmosphere.
- Water Taxi is a fast, private, scenic, and expensive choice for special occasions, private tours, and airport transfers.
- Vaporetto (Water Bus) is a cheaper and slower option with frequent stops (still scenic)

Where to eat in Venice
Look for a bacaro (Venetian tapas bar) like Bacareto da Lele (left side of photo).
It’s is one of the best quick food stops in Venice, known for its affordable cicchetti to try while in the city! Cicchetti are mini sandwiches with cured meats, cheese, or spreads.
Know Before You Go
This is not a sit-down meal. No seating is available. It’s perfect for a quick grab-and-go and enjoy it outside by the canal or on the way back to your hotel.
Bring small cash for faster service.
Must-try:
- Cicchetti (Venetian small bites)
- Spritz (Aperol or Select)
