Where to stay in Bangkok for First Timers?

It was already evening when we arrived in Bangkok. We spent two nights at the Indra Regent Hotel. For first-time visitors to Bangkok, we suggest this hotel, particularly if you enjoy night markets and shopping!
This hotel is conveniently close to the vibrant night markets and stores. It’s just a short walking distance to shop for their incredibly affordable clothing, shoes, fashion/hair accessories, travel bags, and Thai souvenirs.

Morning in Bangkok
Floating Market ~ Damnoen Saduak (near Bangkok)

To start our one day in Bangkok, we hired a private driver to take us to the famous floating market. Since the hotel front desk staff recommended the driver to us, we decided to book him for the entire day. We had no regrets because he not only drove us around and outside Bangkok but also became our tour guide, taking us to unique places we didn’t know about, helping us see more in less time, and recommending delicious local restaurants and food that we absolutely enjoyed!
Our driver was very kind, patient, and accommodating, as he tried his best to speak English and take us to places we wanted to go. As a local, he also recommended the best places to visit in Bangkok and must-try Thai cuisines and desserts, which really made us so grateful and happy to have him not only as our driver but also as our guide throughout our one day in Bangkok.
Bangkok Travel Tips
- It takes ~1.5 hours by car from our hotel in Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
- Consider hiring a driver/tour guide with a car for a full day by asking the hotel front desk staff or
- Try to visit in the morning for the freshest food, fewer crowds, and less hot weather.
- Must bring cash if you plan to buy food there! Vendors do not accept cards.
My honest experience at the Floating Market in Thailand
Visiting the floating market was one of my favorite and most memorable parts of my trip to Thailand. It’s a culturally unique experience I really enjoyed!
My favorite moment was eating fresh local fruits and mango sticky rice and sipping fresh coconut juice right on the boat while taking in the scenery, listening to the lively sounds of the market, and simultaneously browsing for fresh fruits, local snacks, and colorful souvenirs.

Do not skip it even if you only have 24 hours in Bangkok. Based on my experience, it’s worth visiting, especially if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to experience authentic Thai culture and get a glimpse of local life.
For me, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Bangkok that you cannot miss and must be in a first-timer’s Bangkok in one day itinerary!
Wat Prok Charoen (Buddhist temple)
Looking to visit a Buddhist temple during the floating market tour?
Don’t miss a quick visit to Wat Prok Charoen.
As part of our private boat tour, just a short boat ride away from the floating market, we visited Wat Prok Charoen.
Wat Prok Charoen is a simple yet peaceful Buddhist temple along the canals of the Damnoen Saduak district. We visited the local riverside area after our tour at the floating market.
Getting a glimpse of the local Buddhist community adds to an authentic and immersive travel experience during a one-day visit in Thailand.
It’s a quick stop to explore the temple and a quiet space to express gratitude. Unlike the bustling setting at the floating market, the atmosphere here is very different, as it’s more peaceful, and you’ll see many locals praying.
This is also a good place for photo opportunities, as you’ll see some visitors taking photos.
Must-Know Before You Go
- The temple can easily be reached by boat ride along canals. Many private/ hired boat tours departing from the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market docks make a stop here, allowing visitors the chance to combine their floating market adventure with a peaceful cultural experience.
- Expect a serene setting and to see traditional shrine architecture, Buddhist displays, and local monks.
- Free to visit. A small cash donation is appreciated.
- Please remove your shoes before entering.
Chang Puak Elephant Camp Hat Yai
(would NOT do again & NOT recommend)

My honest elephant experiences:
Please forgive me for the lack of awareness about the negative impact of riding an elephant. I’ll be honest ~ I feel ashamed as I share this experience here on my Thailand travel blog. However, I wanted to be honest and share this to raise awareness because I didn’t realize at the time that activities like this could contribute to the long-term suffering of these gentle giants and increase their risk of extinction.
It wasn’t until I went on another elephant ride in India as part of my tour package that I realized the terrible reality and consequences of these elephant activities. At that time, I saw elephants looking very unhealthy, with visible wounds, which made me apprehensive and uneasy about riding them.
Even though I was hesitant, I went along with it and followed what everyone else was doing there, riding the elephants and taking photos. My conscience kept bothering me after my trip to India, which led me to research and look up facts about elephants, and that’s when I became aware and realized the harm these activities can cause. I felt deeply guilty and ashamed for unknowingly participating in it.

Elephant ride in Thailand
The truth about my Thailand elephant experience:
This was my first time riding an elephant in Thailand. Like many travelers, I’ve always wanted to see these gentle giants in person. As I mentioned, at that time I thought I was supporting their conservation. I wasn’t aware that riding elephants contributes to long-term negative effects on these animals and puts their future at risk.
The truth? I have mixed feelings about my elephant ride experience. While I was excited at first and didn’t want to miss this unique opportunity, I honestly felt very uncomfortable and terrified throughout the ride. It wasn’t smooth and fun as I thought it would be. It was long, bumpy, and physically uncomfortable, and mostly I was worried about falling.
It’s a truly wonderful experience seeing the elephants up close and personal, especially the first moment I’ve seen them. However, riding one was not an experience I enjoyed and would recommend.
Riding an elephant may look cute in photos, but the truth? I was scared about falling the entire ride and unknowingly harming these beautiful, gentle giants. Unfortunately, these photos now carry a sense of guilt and shame, knowing what I know now.
What I learned from this experience…
“We can enjoy seeing animals without causing them harm.”
Travelers can choose unforgettable travel experiences that don’t have to come at the expense of animals. I learned elephant rides can cause lasting harm to the elephants’ well-being, and I hope this encourages others to choose ethical wildlife experiences instead.
Afternoon in Bangkok Highlights
Eat Thai food and desserts
For lunch, our driver/tour guide recommended and took us to a local restaurant called “Grandma’s Home”. I was surprised by how affordable yet delicious everything we ordered was! If there’s anything I miss most about my travel to Thailand, it’s definitely the food and desserts!
What to Eat in Bangkok
- Green Curry
- Pad Thai
- Thai Milk Tea
- Fresh local fruits (mangos)
- Durian Ice Cream
I personally enjoyed and recommend all of these to try and would definitely order and eat again!
Food adventure is part travel! It was my first time trying green curry and durian ice cream in Thailand! Oh my gosh! They’re both so delicious! I didn’t think I would like them! Since then, whenever I’d go to a Thai restaurant locally or internationally, I always order green curry and/or ask if they have any durian- flavored desserts!
Bangkok City Tour
In the afternoon, our driver took us on a city tour sightseeing around Bangkok. We got to see the city views, including the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine, the Ministry of Defense building, the Bangkok National Museum, and more!
While the city is globally known as Bangkok, did you know Bangkok has the world’s longest city name? Krung Thep Maha Nakhon!
Wat Arun
Architecture lover? Consider sightseeing or visiting a few of Bangkok’s famous landmarks. Wat Arun is also known as the Temple of Dawn, with a unique, towering central structure detailed with colorful porcelain and seashells.
Must-Know Tips:
- Take a short ferry ride across the Chao Phraya River to reach Wat Arun.
- Ensure you cover your shoulders and knees if planning to visit.
- For beautiful lighting, visit at sunrise and sunset.
- Planning last minute? Reserve ~ Bangkok’s Most Famous Landmarks Tour

Even if you only have one day in Bangkok, you can still enjoy the temple from afar and the river scenery.
Prefer a guided tour?
Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
See the long and gold-plated reclining Buddha inside the Wat Pho temple. Since Wat Pho is known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, visitors can consider getting an authentic massage here.
Must-Know | Travel Tips:
- Expect a crowd here, especially in the afternoon.
- Dress appropriately (cover shoulders and knees)
- Consider a half-day tour that covers Bangkok’s Most Popular Landmarks
Besides the lovely architecture of Wat Pho with colorful and striking roof-tile designs, there are unique stone sculptures of giant guards at the temple entrances.
Expect to see local students, street vendors, and tuk-tuks around the area.
Best places to visit in Bangkok for first timers
Visiting the unique temples in Bangkok is one of the best things to do in Thailand!
Whether you’re staying for 1 or 2 days in Bangkok, adding the famous Thai temples to your Bangkok itinerary is worth it!
My honest experience:
I found Buddhist temples in Bangkok are worth visiting because of their distinctive and colorful architectural style. I can’t help but admire the unique details and take photos!
By visiting these temples, I was able to experience their beauty, history, and the spirituality of Thai culture, adding a deeper sense of appreciation and insights to my overall travel experience.
After our Bangkok city tour and temple sightseeing, we tried some street foods, including fresh mango juice.
Then, we visited a local souvenir shop with vintage cars parked in front of it. I didn’t miss my chance to take photos, as I felt I was time-traveling to the old days and (ta-da) I happened to be in Bangkok, Thailand!
Evening in Bangkok
Best authentic Thai food in Bangkok
- Tom Yum Soup (boiled spicy and sour soup with shrimp)
- Hoi Kraeng (blood cockles with dipping sauce)
- Tod Mun Pla (Thai Fish Cakes)
Once again, we let our driver/tour guide choose where to eat in Bangkok for dinner and order delicious local dishes for us! Thankfully, we did! Every dish he picked was amazingly delicious and gave us an authentic local taste of Thailand!
This memorable food adventure is one of the best things to do in Bangkok that I truly enjoyed, and the reason I want to come back and visit Thailand again!
We’re very grateful to our driver/tour guide for taking us around Bangkok, particularly for introducing us to delicious authentic Thai food! His recommendations as a local gave us incredibly genuine and memorable experiences filled with delicious flavors during our one day in Bangkok!
Bangkok Travel Tips For First-timers
- Don’t miss the chance to try an authentic bowl of Tom Yum Soup, especially if you’re visiting Thailand for the first time! It’s so uniquely flavorful!
- Don’t like spicy food? It’s still worth trying it! I am also sensitive to spicy food, so I asked to make it less spicy and still found it amazingly delicious! Since traveling to Bangkok, Tom yum goong soup has been my new and #1 favorite Thai dish! (Sorry, #2 green curry and #3 Pad Thai).

Looking for the best way to experience Bangkok after sunset?
A trip to Bangkok isn’t complete without exploring a lively night market!
End your one day in Bangkok with affordable shopping, delicious local street food/drinks, and an experience of the local vibrant atmosphere, as we did!
Bangkok Travel Tips
- Bring cash!
- Leave extra space in your luggage if you plan to shop!
- Respectfully negotiate prices especially if buying a lot (as bargaining is expected)
- Beware: It’s EASY to get carried away shopping for clothes at affordable prices, especially when the quality is good ! So guess what? I ended up buying an extra suitcase just to fit all my shopping!
- Planning to shop? Consider staying at a hotel conveniently close to a night market. We stayed here, and it made shopping so much easier that we even went shopping the next morning before leaving Bangkok.
