May this Amsterdam travel guide help you plan a smooth and unforgettable one day in Amsterdam. I’ll also include available day trips from Amsterdam, that’s an alternative/optional if you have more time.
I found Amsterdam charming with curiosity. At every turn, there are bikes. I’d never seen so many bicycles everywhere in my whole life until I went to Amsterdam. So, be careful sightseeing and remember not to walk in a cycle lane when you visit.
Whether you’re visiting as a quick stop on a Europe trip, planning a layover adventure, or squeezing in a short city break, here’s a list of travel ideas to spark what to do, see, and eat in Amsterdam to make the most of perfect one day in Amsterdam!
Amsterdam in One Day Itinerary
Morning in Amsterdam
Canal Boat Cruise
After breakfast, start your one day in Amsterdam by seeing the beautiful city by boat on a guided tour. It’s a good introduction to learn about the city and its history, including the canal houses and districts.
Personally, the canal cruise experience is my favorite activity I did while traveling to the Netherlands. I enjoyed sitting and relaxing on a boat while getting a unique perspective of Amsterdam’s attractions around the canals, with scenic views along the way.
As a first-time visitor, a canal cruise is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in one day that you should not miss! It’s worth it based on my experience! I believe some historic sights are best seen and appreciated from the water.
Travel Tips: Book in advance ONLINE. If you have more time to see the most scenic with canal lights, come back during sunset for an evening cruise! Consider choosing a 24-Hour Boat Ticket.
The Dancing Houses
One of the best things to see in Amsterdam is the Dancing Houses.
Don’t forget to see and photograph these colorful tilting houses! I’m sure you’ve seen them in many travel photos and postcards! The best way to see them is during a canal cruise since the angle from the water highlights and makes the dancing appearance more noticeable.
Wondering why they look like they’re tilting and swaying almost as if they’re dancing, especially when seen from a boat during a canal cruise?
Your tour guide will tell you during your boat tour, and based on research, since houses have very tall and narrow structures, they’re likely to lean, especially due to goods being lifted by hooks. In addition, houses were built on wooden foundations that have shifted over time.
Dam Square
Explore Amsterdam on foot by going to Dam Square. This is one of the free things to do in Amsterdam!
Discover the lively main public square in the heart of Amsterdam, which most tourists come to explore, since there are historic landmarks you can sightsee, including the Royal Palace, National Monument, Nieuwe Kerk (“New Church”).
Depending on when you visit, just like any main square in a city, you may see street performers, festivals, and musicians.
Travel Tip: If interested or you want to do a bit of shopping, there’s a high-end department stores nearby at De Bijenkorf.

Scheepvaarthuis
Admire the architecture at Scheepvaarthuis (Dutch for “Shipping House”). This building caught my eye because of its stunning exterior design, and I found out it’s a 5-star luxury hotel!
It’s near Amsterdam Centraal Station. It’s one of the most unique and richly decorated architectures to observe and photograph when visiting Amsterdam, even if you don’t stay there!
Afternoon Highlights
Basilica of Saint Nicholas
Admire one of the most beautiful churches in Amsterdam!
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Amsterdam is worth visiting because it’s conveniently located across from Amsterdam Central Station and close to the canals.
It’s interesting to know that the church symbolized the revival of Catholic life in the city!
If you need a moment of peace and a quiet place for prayer, visit inside and see the beautiful stained-glass windows, religious paintings and sculptures, and high altar.
Travel Tip: It’s free to enter. Please dress appropriately if you’re planning to visit. Check their updated opening hours schedule.
Damrak Waterfront
Damrak Waterfront is where most tourists come to find plenty of places to eat (cafes and restaurants), places to shop (stores), and canal cruise departure points!
This is also a great spot to take pictures of the historic buildings along the waterfront! In fact, this is actually where we went when searching for Amsterdam Instagram spots in one day!
Travel Tip: You can easily walk to Dam Square from here or hop on a canal cruise. It’s a good place to find and buy souvenirs as well!
Anne Frank House
If you’re into historic museum, remember to book in advance the Anne Frank House ticket.
It tells the story of a Jewish girl hiding from the Naniz during World War II and wrote a diary about it that became world famous.
Photography inside the Secret Annex is not allowed. If you plan to visit, expect to see Anne Frank’s diary display, the secret annex, historical exhibits, and multimedia presentations about the Holocaust, etc.

NEMO Science Museum
The NEMO Science Museum caught my eye as an adult traveler because it has a modern and unique ship-like architectural design!
There are plenty of museums to visit in Amsterdam, and if you’re interested in a science and technology interactive museum, you may like this one, especially if you’re traveling with family and kids!
- Book your experience: Amsterdam: NEMO Science Museum Ticket
Travel Tip: If you want to see the panoramic views of the city and harbor, it has a rooftop terrace FREE to access without needing a ticket!
Rijksmuseum
Another museum you can visit in Amsterdam is the Rijksmuseum. It’s the National Museum of the Netherlands.
If you want to learn more about Dutch history and see art, paintings, and historic displays up close, you’ll enjoy visiting this largest art museum in the Netherlands!
- Book your experience: Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum Entry Ticket
Van Gogh Museum
The next museum you can explore close to the Rijksmuseum is Van Gogh Museum. It’s famous for its collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world.
If you’re curious or interested, consider visiting to learn about one of the world’s most influential painters and see his letters, sketches, drawings, and more!
- Book your experience: Amsterdam: Van Gogh Museum Ticket
If you happen to be near and interested in seeing rotating exhibitions in a historic place by the beautiful riverside, it’s an easy stop to visit. Based on research, they feature Russian history and Dutch-Russian connections with paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and historic artifacts.
My honest travel story: I’m personally not into visiting museums, especially if I’m short on time and only visiting for a day, unless it’s raining, I’d go.
I am including the available museums you can visit to give you more options for things to do in Amsterdam in one day, especially if you’re really into museums.
Amsterdam in One Day Alternative or Optional Day Trip from Amsterdam
(if you have more time)
Explore the Dutch countryside
As a first time visitor adding a countryside exploration in your Amsterdam one day itinerary will make your trip more memorable!
I believe the best way to explore a new country is by experiencing its unique culture, landmarks, traditions, and food!
Exploring the Dutch countryside will let you experience all that as a tourist! It’s one of the top things to do in Amsterdam since it’s a short trip from the city!
Be fascinated to learn about the history and mechanism of the windmills and get a chance to taste the famous Dutch treat, Stroopwafel!
It’s a must-do to see the countryside windmills and experience the peaceful landscapes, which is a new and different experience from the bustling city of Amsterdam.

Dutch Cheesemaking Demonstration Tour
In addition, when exploring the countryside, you’ll have the chance to experience and learn about the Dutch traditional cheese and clog culture through the classic tour demonstration.
See how classic Dutch Gouda cheese is made in the Netherlands, and you may want to sample/buy various cheeses from the local shop. The aged cheeses have a natural protective outer layer rind (normally inedible). Although the rind and wax aren’t meant to be eaten, they’re safe to touch and handle and are typically cut off before serving/eating.

Clogmaking Demonstration Tour

Interested in learning how wooden shoes (clogs) are made in Holland? See for yourself when you come to visit the Dutch countryside!
Clogs are a significant part of Dutch cultural heritage because they’re traditionally worn by farmers, workers, and fishermen to protect their feet.

During the clog-making demonstration, you’ll see the wood being used, the craftsman cutting the shape, and hollowing the inside. Then, they’ll be left to dry before they are painted with traditional Dutch designs. They’re typically designed with flowers (tulips), windmills, or cows.
It’s fun to explore the local village shop, and you may find something you like and buy as a souvenir!

Where to Eat in Amsterdam
It’s not a secret that eating at the center of any city is more expensive. Depending on how much time you have, it may be best to grab a quick and go food option when traveling to Amsterdam for a day. It’s up to you.
If you’re a food enthusiast and have more time to eat, consider visiting Albert Cuyp Market for local cuisine at affordable prices. It’s where you can try most of the local snacks such as the famous Stroopwafels (a thin waffle cookies with caramel syrup), and poffertjes (small, fluffy pancakes). In addition, try Kibbeling, a fried fish piece, and a Broodje haring sandwich.

If you want to eat right on or very close to Damrak, try Dutch fries at Damrak 44 and Dutch poffertjes at Pancakes Amsterdam. There’s also the famous van Wonderen Stroopwafels if you want to try their Stroopwafel, but per reviews, it’s quite expensive. If you prefer a sit-down meal, consider the Grasshopper restaurant, which has an international food selection with a warm atmosphere and lovely view!
