Why solo travel Switzerland?
If you truly enjoy nature, mountains, lakes, cheeses, chocolates, train, boat, and cable car trips, as well as hiking and biking while admiring the stunning and peaceful surrounding, then  Switzerland is an definitely the perfect destination for you! So, what are you waiting for? Find your spark and consider these tips before you go solo travel Switzerland !
Learn what to consider before you go solo travel Switzerland – 38 Things You Must Know For Your First Trip
1. Bring medicines in case you get sick
đź’ˇTravel Tips:
Pack ibuprofen for possible altitude sickness
Pack cold Medicines  and sore throat drops!Â
If you intend to travel during colder months, consider packing cold medicines and sore throat drops. Did you know that colder temperatures can facilitate the transmission of flu and cold viruses? According to some research, cooler temperatures may make respiratory viruses—such as those that cause the flu and colds—more likely to survive and spread. Additionally, cold weather may weaken the body’s defenses against infections.
2. Pack a waterproof jacket, layers of clothing, and a suitable Travel adapter
- Do NOT FORGET:  You’ll need a Type J adapter, if you’re traveling to Switzerland. The country uses a different electrical plug and socket system different from the common European Type C or Type F plugs.
- đź’ˇSwitzerland Travel Tip : Even if you are going in the summer, remember to pack a raincoat, preferably one that is long and thick, especially if you are going up in the mountains! Pack layers of clothing to adapt to the varying temperatures at different elevations. Prepare to dress for variable conditions.
3. Have a “Swiss franc” (CHF) currency (you’ll need it when riding buses if you don’t have a Swiss Travel Pass)
- Swiss franc is abbreviated as CHF, which stands for “Confoederatio Helvetica Franc”
- Switzerland is known by the Latin name “Confoederatio Helvetica”. Swiss websites display CH as its international country code.
- “Franc” to indicate the currency
- CHF = Confoederatio Helvetica Franc 🇨đź‡đź’° = Switzerland currency
- đź’ˇTravel Tip for CLOY fans: Bring CHF currency. You’ll need cash before accessing the Crash Landing On You piano scene by the lake in Iseltwald. I paid 5 CHF Â TWICE when I went. It was NOT opening the first time I paid, so I had to put another 5 CHF. As soon as you pay, please enter quickly. There was NO line when I went around 1630. I was the last one to enter so I recommend watching others do it before you go to avoid placing 5 CHF twice like I did.
- Must Know: When using public restrooms in Switzerland. You’ll need to pay to use it!
4. Prepare to spend more than you expect. Switzerland is more expensive, especially in touristy areas
Based on my experiences traveling twice in Switzerland, I ended up spending a lot more than I did anywhere else, no matter where I went or what I bought in Switzerland.
- Why is Switzerland one of the most expensive countries in the world?
- Swiss salaries are among the highest in the world, so businesses raise prices to pay for labor costs. Their Swiss franc currency is strong, so tourists must pay extra for imported products and services.
- đź’ˇTravel Tip: Eating and drinking in city centers and tourist areas is more expensive. To save money, go to local restaurants where local people eat.
- More Saving Money đź’ˇ Travel Tips:
- If you are traveling on a budget or short on time, go to Supermarkets for ready-made meals (Eat at Migros, Coop, Aldi, Lidl).
- Swiss Travel Pass: Â gives unlimited access to trains, buses, and boats if you’re traveling a lot to different regions in Switzerland.
- Planning a longer stay in Switzerland? Half-Fare Card lets you pay 50% less on tickets.
- Avoid Tourist Traps: Do NOT buy souvenirs at the airport and tourist gift shops. Instead, purchase them from supermarkets.
5. Download Google Translate. German, French, Italian, and Romansh are the languages spoken in Switzerland

- English is widely spoken, particularly by younger people, in the majority of tourist destinations and large cities.
- đź’ˇTravel Tip: Please be aware, though, that I had to use Google Translate to communicate with older German people and in smaller towns. So, I Â recommend having these languages installed on your Google Translate app just in case so you can access and use them even if you do NOT have wifi.
- Must- Know: The language that people speak depends on where you are in the country. For instance, this is Lugano, in the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland.
6. Stay nearby or spend more time in the breathtaking scenery of waterfalls, mountains, and lakes. Stunning Nature is FREE!

- đź’ˇTravel Tip: To save money, stay in a little village outside of a big pricey city. The Swiss mountains and lakes provide tranquility, clean air, and breathtaking views, but cities like Zurich and Geneva can feel crowded and touristy.
- What I wish I knew before traveling to Switzerland: Beautiful Swiss towns that seem like postcards come to life — such as mountain villages  Wengen, Murren, Gimmelwald offer scenic views.
- For a more local experience, I stayed near a little town HERE that is walkable from the beautiful lake. There is a beautiful site to gaze out over the lake, and swimming is free.
7. Bring a water bottle. There are plenty of water fountains in the cities and villages
- Did you know? Switzerland has some of the cleanest tap water in the world! Swiss water is safe and fresh, according to my research and personal experiences.
- đź’ˇTravel tip: Avoid purchasing bottled water, which can cost anywhere from 3 to 5 CHF per bottle in supermarkets!
- Remain hydrated and save more money:Â I was impressed to see plenty of public water fountains everywhere and particularly amazed by the taste of their water! And the best part? You can refill for free! So, remember to bring your reusable water bottle as it’s one of the best ways to remain hydrated and save money in Switzerland!
- More travel tip: When hiking in the summer, use an insulated bottle to keep the water cold.
8. Don’t miss visiting Crash Landing On You filming locations (Famous K-drama- if you’re a fan) Iseltwald is a must-visit!
Switzerland is the perfect destination to visit if, like me, you’re a fan of Crash Landing on You (CLOY)!
- Best time to visit: I’m glad I visited in November as I believe it was the ideal month to visit because it was when summer, fall, and winter hues all came together with such perfect scenery that I fell in love with Switzerland even more! It’s less crowded too!

- You absolutely must not miss Iseltwald’s famous piano scene 🎹Remember that scene when Captain Ri plays the piano on the wooden pier, and Yoon Se-ri hears him? It is truly a dreamy experience to see the breathtaking view of Lake Brienz with stunning mountains surrounding it! It’s very serene, lovely, and romantic. For CLOY fans, it’s an ideal bucket list destination and an absolute must visit in Switzerland.
- đź’ˇTravel Tip: Base yourself in Interlaken because it’s close to most places CLOY filming locations.  There was only one line and a few people when  I arrived around 4:30 pm. Consider visiting early or later in the day.
- How to get there? From the Interlaken OST bus stop, take bus number 103, and get off in Iseltwald. Then, it’s about two to three minutes’ walk away from the bus stop. You can also take a boat ride to Iseltwald. With a Swiss Travel Pass, boat rides on Lake Brienz are free.
9. Enjoy an unforgettable cup of Swiss hot chocolate (it’s the BEST I’ve ever had)
- I’ve been to Switzerland twice and every time I always crave their hot chocolates! For me, they have the world’s best hot chocolates!
- Unquestionably, the country is renowned for its rich, creamy, and fluffy hot chocolate made with Swiss milk and served with fresh whipped cream (“Schlagrahm”) on top for added delight! I love it so much!  Until now, I cannot find a place anywhere in the world that has the exact perfect taste.
- đź’ˇTravel tip: It’s best to have it in a cozy setting — perfect for a cold-weather treat. I enjoyed Swiss hot chocolates MORE in Jungfraujoch and Glacier 3000. If you happen to be there, try it! Perhaps, it’s the weather or the view or both! haha
- Gifts to take home: I purchased plenty of Ovomaltine powdered hot chocolates and snacks at the supermarket as souvenirs.
10. Consider paragliding when you solo travel Switzerland to experience excitement and peace simultaneously
- My favorite experience: A once-in-a-lifetime adventure, paragliding in Switzerland offers stunning views of the Alps, lakes, and valleys! 🪂🏔Â
- Expensive, but worth it: It is definitely worth the high price! One of the most popular activities in Interlaken is paragliding! I had mine there, and it was a fantastic experience!

- đź’ˇTravel Tips: Book in advance HERE and don’t forget to bring your Insta360 or GoPro. Check the weather before booking!
- CLOY fan: I was motivated to go paragliding in Switzerland by my fondness for CLOY. I’m a huge FAN! I’ve experienced paragliding in Turkey and Peru, but I’ve always wanted to try it in Switzerland. When I went to Switzerland for the first time, I missed the chance. Therefore, I made sure on my second trip, I experienced it similarly just like Se-ri’s view.
11. Check the weather & live webcams FIRST before heading up to the mountains and booking any tour!
It’s unfortunate that many first-time visitors overlook the fact that bad weather can result in poor visibility in the mountains, especially after spending so much money just getting up there — it’s disappointing!
Be aware: The weather and visibility on the mountain differ from the weather and visibility below it. Check the Swiss weather cameras to see the level of visibility before going up to the alpine locations. Please note it gets colder as you travel higher up a mountain. This is why even in warm weather in Interlaken below, the temperature in Jungfraujoch (3,466m) above is cold.
Avoid this mistake: Unfortunately, when I first visited Jungfraujoch in June, even if it was summer, all I could see was fog and a white landscape absent of the picturesque mountain views. It was extremely disappointing and not worth paying $250 to not even see the views I had hoped for when I arrived.Â
đź’ˇTravel Tips: You can go on Google to look up live webcams in Switzerland beforehand. Prior to booking any excursion, including any Swiss mountain experience, remember to check the weather first. Ensure there is free rescheduling for the day excursions you reserved.
12. Visit the world’s highest Swiss chocolate shop
Lindt Chocolate Shop: It’s the highest Swiss chocolate shop in the world—offers a unique experience with a large assortment of Lindt chocolate and an insight into the chocolate-making process.
Location: Jungfraujoch Top of Europe at an elevation of 3,454 meters.
What to expect:Â Whether you are a chocolate lover or not, it’s interesting to visit and taste a wide selection of Lindt chocolate. It was my first time to see a large and colorful collection and I enjoyed the experience. Please note depending on when you go, it can be crowded and may have a long line.Â
13. Experience an authentic Swiss tradition by tasting the classic Swiss Cheese Fondue

True Swiss Encounter: 🧀 When visiting Switzerland, you must not miss the traditional Swiss cheese fondue!🏔️Fondue is more than just food; it’s an experience! It is created with the best cheese from Switzerland, which is rich, creamy, and melts in your mouth.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: For the ultimate experience, I suggest savoring the melted cheese while taking in picturesque and charming Swiss scenery.
Were you aware of their tradition? You might have to buy beverages or perform a song if you drop your bread into the pot!
Local advice: Avoid consuming water while eating fondue! According to Swiss citizens, consuming water with fondue might upset your stomach. They advise drinking it with hot tea or white wine instead.
14. Walk inside a high-altitude Ice Palace and see ice sculptures and tunnels
The Ultimate Glacier Experience: Enter a frozen palace inside an actual glacier, where crystal-clear ice that’s thousands of years old has been preserved inside the Aletsch Glacier! Be prepared to be enchanted by ice and feel the glacier beneath your feet! Admire exquisite ice creations, glistening blue ice walls, and ice tunnels.
đź’ˇTravel Tip | What to expect:Â Bring a thick jacket and non-slip shoes! Even though you may dislike spending a lot of time in the cold, it’s fascinating to observe that everything, including the floor, was made of ice! (which is the most remarkable feature)
15. Explore the traditional Swiss houses when you solo travel Switzerland
Admire the Swiss Chalet, a lovely wooden Swiss home in the Alps with a wooden balcony adorned with vibrant flowers, green louvered shutter, and a sloping brown roof.
One of the best ways to see Switzerland’s rich history, culture, and distinctive architecture is to explore classic wooden homes with a unique cultural charm!
đź’ˇTravel Tip:Â Consider staying in one for an ultimate Swiss traditional experience.
16. Explore hiking trails, lakes, and viewpoints that are 100% free activities
Although traveling to Switzerland is  expensive, most of the best things to do in Switzerland are free!
Switzerland is definitely for nature lovers! Even if it costs a lot to travel to Switzerland, I appreciate that once you arrive there, you can explore nature for free. What requires more time and money, though, is the travel/transportation to and from places. Â
On my first trip to Switzerland, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that hiking, swimming in the lakes, and visiting viewpoints of the lake encircled by mountains were all free!
đź’ˇTravel Tip:Â Before you travel to Switzerland, do your research on free activities like hiking trails, lakes, and viewpoints! You’ll never know there’s one or two free activities within just walking distance from where you happen to stay!
17. Visit a Swiss supermarket to buy local fresh fruits, desserts & souvenirs
đź’ˇSave money tips: I mainly recommend going to supermarkets to spend LESS on souvenirs such as chocolates, wine, and cheeses. In addition, if you are tight on time, arriving late in the evening, or traveling on a budget, it would be ideal to find a supermarket for ready-made, on-the-go or quick-grab food.
If you are also the type of traveler (like me) who has to have fruits or dessert while traveling, then I recommend buying at the local supermarket, particularly fresh fruits. Based on my experiences, I didn’t see fruits on restaurants menu. I love eating fruits (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and cherries) back home so I crave them while traveling. I am thankful they have these fresh in the supermarket that I can buy!
đź’ˇTravel Tip: When you take the train from Interlaken to Zurich, you’ll see Migros supermarket at the train station. That’s where I bought dinner when I solo travel Switzerland (since I arrived late in the evening) .
💡Local Tip: I also bought my souvenirs (Swiss branded chocolates and Ovolmaltine goodies) at the supermarkets as advised by locals. I asked the restaurant staff how they made their cup of hot chocolate since I loved it so much. They showed me the brand Ovolmaltine and said I can buy them at the local supermarkets.
18. Experience scenic views by train, boat, and cable car rides (allow you to appreciate the breathtaking landscapes)
The world’s most picturesque train, boat, and cable car rides are unquestionably found in Switzerland!
Plenty of things to see in Switzerland: These trips give you the chance to see spectacular landscapes, lakes, and mountains in the most serene and beautiful way possible!
See what you can – here are the rides with the most beautiful lake & mountain views:
Scenic Train Rides
- Glacier Express
- GoldenPass Express
- Bernina Express
Breathtaking Boat Rides
- Lake Thun & Lake Brienz
- Lake Lucerne Boat Cruise
- Lake Geneva Cruise
Must-Do Cable Car Rides
- Jungfraujoch – “Top of Europe”
- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
- Schilthorn – James Bond 007 Views
đź’ˇTravel Tip:Â Consider Swiss Travel Pass if you intend to take multiple scenic rides!
19. Spend some time reflecting by the lake where you can find peace and serenity
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Don’t miss relaxing overlooking a lake and don’t forget to take pictures! The view from top is the most beautiful spot based on my experience!
What to visit in Switzerland
Here are some of the most famous and stunning lake views and peaceful locations to rest, relax, and appreciate the beauty of nature, if you want to experience peace, serenity, and solitude while looking out over a lake in Switzerland.
- Lake Brienz
- Lake Oeschinen
- Lake Blausee
- Lake Caumase
- Lake Lucerne
- Lake Lugano
- Lake Geneva
đź’ˇBest time to visit: Avoid crowds by visiting early morning or late afternoon.
20. Swim in Switzerland’s stunning and pristine lakes during the summer
Switzerland is a great place to swim in the summer because it has some of the world’s cleanest and most stunning lakes! Unless otherwise noted, most Swiss lakes are free to swim in. Be prepared to see amazing sights and incredibly clear water!
Please be reminded to swim only in designated areas.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Plan to stay near spots on Lakes Thun or Brienz during the summer if you want to swim. So, it’s only walking distance from your hotel/accommodation. You may find hidden swimming spots like we did.
21. Don’t just explore nature, consider visiting Chillon castle
Visiting this castle is like a scene straight out of a fairy tale!
It’s considered the most beautiful castle in Switzerland and the most visited historical attraction is Chillon Castle, which is situated near Montreux, Lake Geneva.
What to expect: Be prepared to see an enchanting site with fairytale-like and breathtaking views on the coast of Lake Geneva. Discover the ancient halls, towers, beautiful courtyards, knights’ armor and furnishings, mysterious dungeons, and the tower’s view of Lake Geneva and the Alps.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Book your ticket early and enjoy photographing the lovely view of the castle, lake, and mountains by going early or late in the afternoon!
22. Visit Schlosskirche (Castle Church) Interlaken
What to expect: It’s situated in the heart of Interlaken and free to enter. See the serene, medieval church in a charming castle-like setting with stunning stained-glass windows. Admire the lovely courtyard and garden, as well as the medieval architecture.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: It’s a must see when in Interlaken as it’s only five minutes or less from the Interlaken train station. Remember to snap a picture of the picturesque surroundings!
23. Purchase local cheese, bread, fruits & snacks and have a picnic in nature
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Have a local experience by buying local fresh bread, cheese, fruits and snacks from supermarket/village shops, then have a picnic outdoors with a scenic view of nature. You can save money while also appreciating more of the breathtaking places.
Enjoy more lovely settings while saving money:Â Find family-run eateries serving traditional Swiss food at lower prices in smaller mountain villages.
đź’ˇMore Travel Tips: Asking locals you happen to meet where they eat or suggest places to have meals is a brilliant idea. I was lucky to encounter a local Swiss couple at a bus stop as I solo travel Switzerland. After exchanging smiles, the woman and I sparked a conversation. I took the chance to ask more about Switzerland. I was thankful I met the kind Swiss couple as they also helped me with directions and suggested the best things to do in Switzerland.
24. Travel in summer or autumn for the best sceneries
Although Switzerland is beautiful all year round, the most stunning colors of the landscapes and outdoor activities may be found during the summer (June–August) and fall (September–November) seasons based on my travel experiences after visiting the country twice.
đź’ˇTravel Tips:Â
- Travel in the summer, if you want to experience the longest daylight hours, outdoor adventures (hiking, biking, lake swims), lush greenery views, and colorful flowers! Please note some places offer FREE bike rentals in the summer.
- Travel in the fall, if you prefer golden colors, fewer crowds, and a cozy atmosphere. Autumn is my favorite season as I found the scenery to be more captivating and beautiful when snow begins to fall on the mountain tops yet the lakes and valleys remain colorful. The scenery is so dreamy! It’s like straight out of a painting. I also like that it’s the ideal time of year to enjoy peace and take in the beautiful surroundings as there are fewer people there.
25. Don’t forget to receive a refund for expensive purchases

VAT refunds can help you save money if you plan to purchase a high-quality watch in Switzerland.
đź’ˇTravel tip: Remember, when buying Swiss watch or an expensive item as a tourist, bring your passport and ask the sales staff for a Tax Free Form after purchase.
Tax free shopping must- know: If a foreign visitor spends more than CHF 300.00 (including value-added tax), they will be refunded as long as they depart the country within 30 days. Source and steps how to do it here.
26. Avoid taking a taxi unless you really have to

Transportation in Switzerland is expensive. When I took a taxi in Zurich in the evening I spent $72 for 13-15 minutes drive to get to my hotel.
đź’ˇMistakes to avoid | Travel Tips: Â Please be aware that, like in other countries, taxis may scam you by charging higher price, especially at night, and by taking longer routes. Consider taking Bolt or Uber for a set price. I found Bolt is cheaper. Additionally, if staying in major city when you arrive from the airport, pick a hotel with free Airport Shuttle and/or close to the train station.
đź’ˇMore saving tips: To save money on transportation rely on public transport and consider taking scenic trains with saver day pass (allows you to travel Switzerland for a single day on a single ticket), Swiss Travel Pass if visiting multiple places, and use the Half Fare Card if staying for one month.
27. The most popular attractions in Switzerland are NOT actually that close to one another
đź’ˇMust know in Switzerland:Â When planning to solo travel Switzerland, it’s crucial to note that the main attractions are spread out. Â
Know and prioritize what you want to see:Â Since the most popular and most visited sites in Switzerland are located far apart, smart planning is essential to save money and time. Although the efficient train system in Switzerland is helpful, lengthy distances need careful planning of day trips and base city selection!
Distances to take into consideration when planning a Switzerland trip :
- Zurich → Lucerne: 50 min
- Lucerne → Interlaken: 2 hrs Â
- Interlaken→Zurich: 2 hrs
- Interlaken → Jungfraujoch: 2 hrs (via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen)
- Interlaken → Zermatt (Matterhorn): 2.5 hrs
- Zermatt → Geneva: 3.5 hrsÂ
- Zurich → Lugano: 2 hrs
- Zurich → Geneva: 3 hrs
- Lucerne → Montreux: 3 hrs
💡Travel tips: Plan Wisely. Instead of changing hotels every day, consider staying in two or three ideal and advantageous locations where you can explore nearby attractions and do day trips. Remember, just like any trip, prioritize what you want to see and experience.
Where to stay in Switzerland
💡More Travel tips: Consider basing one of your stays in or near Interlaken (great for day trips to nearby attractions = Top of Europe (Jungfraujoch), Iseltwald, Lauterbrunnen & Grindelwald) and Zurich (where the international airport is) like how I did mine, but pick Zurich hotels with free airport transfer or located near airport and near train station.
As for picturesque landscapes, if I’d do another solo travel to Switzerland, I’d stay in mountain villages  Wengen, Murren, Gimmelwald for scenic views. I would also stay just within a minute walking distance by Lake Brienz at Strandhotel—just outside is the CLOY piano scene of Captain Ri! When I visited the CLOY pier filming location, I told myself one day I’ll come back and stay at this hotel!
If you’re a couple or traveling with friends sharing hotels, consider one of your stays and pick one of the best hotels in Switzerland with a view.
28. It’s best to have extra money available in case something goes wrong or you want to indulge in an experience or luxury item

đź’ˇTravel Tip: This is the rule I always follow on any first-time trip I take – over budget more than I plan for regardless if the country I am visiting is expensive or not. It doesn’t necessarily mean overspending. For me, it’s having/allocating some extra money for some more luxury experiences and possible misfortunes that may happen.
đź’ˇPrepare for just-in-case: Isn’t it always a good idea to have more just in case you end up wanting to spend on a “luxury” experience/activities or goods you encounter and didn’t plan for? This always happens to me and I am thankful I include it in my just-in-case spending plan.
đź’ˇHave a safety net: This can also act as a safety net in case something goes wrong (missed train/flight, lost something, etc)IÂ am prepared for an unforeseen expense.
29. Consider visiting the surrounding countries of Switzerland
Given that I always fly from the United States, the price of a plane ticket to Europe is typically expensive. So to make the most of my trip, I make it a point to visit at least two to three different countries when I travel abroad. Other people I know do this too. They visit France and Italy in addition to Switzerland. If it’s in your budget, consider visiting Switzerland’s surrounding countries as well!
When I FIRST traveled to Switzerland, I also traveled to France, Germany, and Austria.
On my SECOND trip to the country, I combined it with a trip to Italy.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Â Depending on where you are traveling from, you may save more money on flight tickets if you plan to visit two to three countries all at once when you take your trip.
>>> GET YOUR TRAIN RIDES AND PASSES IN EUROPE BOOKED HERE! <<<
30. Download  the SBB app (check real-time schedule/updates of public transportation & purchase tickets)
The SBB Mobile app makes it simpler to plan and save money on Switzerland’s efficient but pricey public transport.
In the app, you can find schedules for buses, trains, and trams in real time throughout Switzerland and easily purchase tickets—no standing in line at stations!
Mistakes to avoid: During my first solo trip to Switzerland, I forgot to download the SBB Mobile App. Another traveler I met on a train from Interlaken to Zurich showed me and informed me about it. The SBB app is regarded as the most efficient way to navigate Swiss public transportation!
đź’ˇTravel Tips: To find discounts/ savings, use the “Supersaver Tickets” option! For less expensive travel, check prices and purchase Saver Day Passes. Check the real-time updates on platform changes and delays and reserve picturesque train trips (such as the Bernina Express or the Glacier Express).
31. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses (it’s brighter up in the mountains) and comfortable shoes!
It gets really bright in the Swiss mountains, so don’t forget to wear sunglasses and sunscreen! Â Stronger sunlight is a result of Switzerland’s high elevation, particularly in the Alps. The glare from lakes, glaciers, and snow may be very strong, even on cloudy days!
It’s essential to protect oneself. At higher altitudes, the sun’s rays are more powerful. Wearing sunglasses when hiking or sightseeing helps protect your eyes from the brightness caused by snow and ice, preventing snow blindness. Please note the intense sunlight can be painful even in the summer!
💡Travel Tip: If, like me, you forget to bring sunglasses when visiting Jungfraujoc, there is a shop that sells polarized sunglasses there.
đź’ˇMore Travel Tip: Switzerland is a beautiful destination for hiking and walking. To care for your feet when hiking, wear shoes made particularly for the activity. Bring at least two pairs of shoes (one for hikes and one for lengthy walks). As with any trip, wearing suitable clothing and comfortable shoes will make the experience more enjoyable.
32. Remember to push the button to enter and exit train doors and schedule a buffer time for possible delays and changes
Must-Know:Â Please note, that Swiss train doors do NOT open automatically, unlike in some countries. During my solo trip in Switzerland, I was unaware of this since the doors were closed so I thought I had missed the train. I had no idea that I needed to press a button to enter (haha).
💡More Travel Tips: Schedule a buffer time for possible delays and changes. Please allow additional time when switching between buses and trains. Although Swiss trains are usually on time, there are sometimes delays (particularly on mountain routes). Weather conditions may cause mountain trains (Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat) to take longer.
đź’ˇDon’t forget: Check the SBB Mobile App for real-time updates and changes!
33. Book scenic train reservations early!
Please note scenic train seats are popular so seats are limited!
(Glacier Express, Bernina Express, GoldenPass Express) = famous panoramic trains
đź’ˇTravel tips:Â Travel on these picturesque trains is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass; however, seat reservations are necessary and must to be paid separately. Window seats go first so book in advance for the best views!
Where to reserve Scenic Train Seats?
- SBB Mobile App or official train websites:
34. Always choose local currency when running your credit card through the device
SAVE MONEY WHEN TRAVELING ABROAD
💡Travel Tips: Make sure use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and when the person or credit card device at a restaurant, store, or shop asks, “Would you be paying in (CHF) /local currency OR USD/the currency of where your card is from?”
- You should always choose/accept to pay in local currency to save money!
- When withdrawing money from your debit card, never accept the conversion rates in ATMs prompt to convert it for you. Be cautious and notice the markup!
Choosing to pay with local currency rather than USD will likely result in a better exchange rate which will save you money.
35. Pack light: Do NOT bring luggage you CANNOT carry on your own on buses or trains or upstairs or uphill
💡Travel tip: Travel light when traveling in Switzerland. Avoid bringing a lot of luggages. Heavy baggage would be a pain because many trips around Switzerland (such as Zurich → Interlaken → Jungfraujoch) require transferring trains.
Please be aware of the limited luggage space on trains. You will need to place your bags close to doors or lift them into overhead racks.
If you also stay in old towns (Lucerne, Zermatt, and Montreux), they may not have elevators so you have to carry your bags upstairs in your accommodation.
36. Ask locals inside a store or restaurant or by the bus stop for help if you get lost or need help finding something
My experience has shown me that Swiss people are helpful and kind. They gave me directions, advised me where to go, and helped me find the items I wanted to buy at a supermarket. Therefore, as a solo traveler, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
đź’ˇTravel tip: Smile and ask locals you might come across at bus stops or neighborhood supermarkets or inside the shops for guidance if you need help finding something (restaurant, tourist/non-tourist location, souvenirs), need someone to help you take your pictures, or have questions about transportation. Just be mindful when doing this in Zurich and Geneva, as I experienced that not everyone there was friendly to tourists.
37. Ovulmatine is a must-buy in Switzerland in the supermarket! It’s one of the most popular/delicious products that can only be purchased in the country!
Ovomaltine is a Swiss classic deliciously rich chocolate flavor you must try and bring home as a souvenir.
I’ve had Ovaltine in other countries, but the flavor tasted different. In Switzerland, the original Swiss chocolate flavor tastes far better and more delicious.
đź’ˇTravel Tips: Every Ovomaltine product tastes so good! So, consider purchasing Ovomaltine biscuits, Ovomaltine powder (to make delicious hot chocolate), Ovomaltine spread (like Nutella), and crunchy Ovomaltine chocolate bars. I cannot find/buy most of my favorite Ovomaltine products in America, so while solo traveling Switzerland, I made time to visit the supermarket.
If you cannot purchase or bring it home, you can try the Ovomaltine ice cream, which I first tasted during the summer when I visited Switzerland. As long as you are not allergic to any of its ingredients, I recommend it to anyone traveling in Switzerland for the first time to try Ovomaltine! Â
đź’ˇTravel Tips: For cheaper prices, buy Ovolmaltine at Coop or Migros (where I bought mine). If you’re short on time, you may find/buy at airports and souvenir shops but know they are more expensive there.
38. Be prepared to pay when using public restrooms in Switzerland
Please note most public restrooms are NOT free. So be prepared to pay 1-2 CHF.
Some restrooms may accept contactless card payments, but always carry coins with you when in public areas (train stations, shopping malls, highway rest stops) in case you need to use the restroom.
đź’ˇTravel Tip: Use the bathroom before you leave your hotel and after eating at restaurants or drinking at a cafe, even if you don’t feel the need to. Please note when you go to the closest McDonald’s and Starbucks locations, you will need the code on your receipt to access the restrooms.
