Planning how to have an easy and fun Macau day trip from Hong Kong?
Wondering what to see in Macau in 1 day?
This post shows how to have a Macau day trip from Hong Kong by bus and what to consider exploring to experience the best of Macau. The Macau travel tips and guide I will share are based on my three days travel to Hong Kong and Macau as a solo traveler. I did NOT do any Macau day tour package or Macau tour from Hong Kong by any tour company.
I did my entire Hong Kong and Macau trip all by myself and I can say I felt safe the whole time.
Doing a Macau day trip from Hong Kong by bus as a solo traveler without booking a tour package helped me save money.
I hope this post will help you plan your Macau day trip from Hong Kong and experience the best of Macau.
Macau Day Trip from Hong Kong
How to go to Macau from Hong Kong By Bus?
Depending on where you are staying, you will need to travel to get to HZMB (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge) Hong Kong Port
Where I stayed in HONG KONG (RECOMMEND): Four Points by Sheraton Tung Chung
Steps:
1. Take a B4 Bus or Taxi to get to HZMB (Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge) Hong Kong Port
2. Find the sign “To Zhuhai & Macao” and walk inside to proceed to the Customs Hall
3. Must go through and get cleared at Immigration and Customs
4. Look for sign on top “Shuttle Bus Ticket Center”, go to ticketing kiosks to purchase a bus ticket to go to Macau
Adult ticket costs HKD 65 (about ~ $8 to $9 USD) UPDATED as of August 2024 at the time of writing
5. Proceed to the bay area for boarding and take the shuttle bus going to Macau (40-45 mins ride)
6. At Macau port, must go through Immigration & Customs
Tip: There is a tourist information center located at the Macau airport. That’s where I went to ask for directions on how to get to the old town of Macau
How do I get to the ruins in Macau?
From the Macau airport, take bus 101x and stop at M135 (Almeida Ribeiro/Tai Fung)
At stop M135, you can use your GPS or ask people where the Ruin of Saint Paul’s is. It’s just within walking distance from the bus stop.
Tip: If you get lost or don’t have GPS, ask directions from locals you see inside the shops and stores. I didn’t have to use a GPS. It’s easier to show pictures to the locals if asking them for directions.
I showed the picture of the Ruins of Saint Paul’s brochure (I got it from the tourist information center at the Macau airport) to the locals as I asked for directions. I had no problems and it was easy to find.
Tip: Bring a travel umbrella and/or portable pocket mini fan as it can be humid and hot.
All the places I saw and mentioned under “What to see in Macau in 1 day?” are within walking distance from each other as soon as arriving at stop M135 (Almeida Ribeiro/Tai Fung).
Please note I didn’t find many options for sit-down restaurants while traveling around this area. It’s mostly small stores and shops.
Morning and afternoon itinerary:

What to see in Macau in 1 day?

- Ruins of St. Paul’s
- Company of Jesus Square
- St. Dominic’s Square

Is Macau worth seeing?
Yes! There are many sightseeing to appreciate the old and modern parts of Macau.
Where should I go in Macau?
Depending on your preferences, you can choose to spend your day trip to Macau in the old town area (historic Centre of Macau) or modern side of Macau at Cotai Strip (Las Vegas of Asia)
When I did my day trip to Macau, I preferred to experience the unique landmarks in Macau so I spent my day trip to Macau at the historic Centre of Macau.
If you have more than one day in Macau, consider exploring:
- The Cotai Strip
- Fishermans Wharf
- Macau Tower
- A-Ma Temple
- Taipa Village (visit at night)
- Macau Giant Panda Pavilion
- Mandarin’s House
Is Macau a walkable city?
Yes! Whether you are going to Historic Centre of Macau or The Cotai Strip, unique places are within walking distance.
If you prefer to see and experience Asia’s Las Vegas vibes and surroundings or want to feel like you’re in Europe, then consider spending your day trip to Macau at Cotai Strip. I explored Las Vegas in the States many times and I’ve also been to Venice, Paris and London, so I chose to spend my day trip at the old town side of Macau instead.
Things to do in Macau at night
- Wynn Fountain show
- The Cotai Strip
- Venetian
- Londoner
- Galaxy Hotel
- City of Dreams
- Studio City
These attractions are located at the modern side of Macau. If you plan to stay in the evening in Macau or you’re spending 2-3 days in Macau, these are the places to consider exploring and adding to your Macau travel itinerary.
