I traveled to India solo, but not entirely alone, as I was with my private tour guide most of the time. Since I wasn’t comfortable traveling in India as a woman on my own, I booked a Golden Triangle tour India package. I had my own private driver and a different tour guide each day throughout the tour. Fortunately, I was also able to customize my itinerary and add several places I was interested in seeing that weren’t on the original/standard Golden Triangle tour itinerary, which I will share in this India blog.

Best Golden Triangle Tour India for 5 days: Itinerary For First Timers
Spending 5 days in India was full of surprising, unexpected, and magical moments that made my India trip so unforgettable! These are the best things to do in India that I saw, did, ate, and experienced, including what I don’t recommend and what I found worth it as a first-timer to consider adding to your Golden Triangle tour in 5 days!

Afternoon: Arrival in Delhi Airport (DEL)

Accommodation: Rockland Hotel C R Park (Where I stayed ~ 4-star hotel)
I got picked up by my driver from the Delhi airport. After pickup, I was transferred to my hotel at Rockland C R Park .
Once settled and freshened up, I was supposed to start my half-day sightseeing tour at Akshardham Temple, Lotus Temple, and Agrasen ki Baoli per my Golden Triangle India Tour itinerary. However, due to a delayed Air India flight from Chicago to New Delhi and the immigration line, I met up with my driver around 7pm.

Because of a delayed flight and late arrival, my original Day 1 itinerary had to be squeezed into Day 2 sightseeing.
I will share my original 5-day Golden Triangle India Tour itinerary on the first day and show the locations I was meant to see on the half-day tour.
Since I still wanted to see these locations, they were still kindly included in the Day 2 Delhi city sightseeing itinerary. As a concession, on Day 2, I had to give up a few other spots that I didn’t mind removing from the schedule.
Lotus Temple
The first stop on your Day 1 Golden Triangle India tour to consider adding to your itinerary is the Lotus Temple. See the lotus-shaped structure made of marble petals! This is one of the best things to do in Delhi.
If it’s your first time visiting Delhi, it’s a peaceful space away from the busy streets. It’s a place for worship, prayer, and meditation. The unique architecture is a good photo opportunity!

- Dress respectfully (cover shoulders and knees)

Akshardham Temple
See the stunning architecture of Akshardham Temple. It’s one of the largest and most intricate hand-carved stone Hindu temples in the world! I didn’t get to visit inside. It’s just a quick photo stop due to my late arrival on my first day in Delhi (this stop was just added to my Day 2 itinerary).
According to research, you can see thousands of sculptures of Hindu deities, saints, animals, and traditional Indian motif designs inside.
If you decide to visit in the evening, there is a musical fountain show to watch that visitors enjoy.
Must-know | Travel Tips
- If you plan to go inside, expect strict security measures. Cameras, mobile phones, smartwatches, and large bags are not permitted inside.
- Dress respectfully (Cover shoulders and knees)
Agrasen KI Baoli
One of the best things to do in Delhi that you can’t miss is to see and photograph the Agrasen Ki Baoli. Interestingly, it’s an ancient step well (an underground well with descending steps) built to store water.
This place is a very popular tourist attraction in Delhi, so it can get crowded very easily. I recommend visiting a bit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
Bring a portable pocket mini-fan because it gets really hot here!

Jama Mosque
On day 2 of a Golden Triangle tour in India, a visit to Jama Masjid is one of the unique things to do in Old Delhi, as it’s one of India’s largest mosques. It’s built with red sandstone and white marble. It’s interesting to discover how massive the courtyard is, which can accommodate thousands of worshippers!
Witnessing the surroundings and atmosphere here truly made me realize I’m in a different country and gave me a sense of admiration and respect for the mosque and the religious tradition practiced here.
Must-Know | Travel Tips:
- Please dress respectfully.
- Wear socks as you’ll have to remove your shoes before entering.
- Bring cash for camera fees.
- There is a robe that can be borrowed/rented.
- Try to visit in the morning. Based on my experience, it can get crowded even in the morning,
- Ensure you bring a portable pocket mini-fan because it gets really hot here!
Raj Ghat
Are you a fan of Gandhi? If you plan a trip to Delhi, consider visiting Raj Ghat. It’s the place where the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was cremated. It’s a peaceful memorial to commemorate Gandhi, with a black marble platform in the middle of a serene garden.
Raj Ghat was on my original Day 2 India itinerary, but I had to skip it due to a change in my schedule. I think it’s worth a stop since it’s free to visit, and a quiet space to express gratitude and reflect.
Humayun’s Tomb
Humayun’s Tomb is an historical landmark in New Delhi. It’s considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal! Visit if you’re interested in its history and see the first garden tomb in the Indian subcontinent. Did you know it’s the initial structure in India to use red sandstone on such a magnificent scale?
The highlight of the structure is its unique red sandstone façade with a white marble dome.
Humayun’s Tomb was on my original Day 2 India itinerary, but I had to skip it due to a change in my schedule. I think it’s worth a stop if you enjoy architectural designs and history.
India Gate
One of the popular tourist spots in New Delhi is India Gate. It’s an iconic memorial landmark that honors the soldiers who fought and died during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
It’s free to view the monument, where you’ll see a lot of locals and visitors taking photos. The atmosphere here when I walked around the area was pretty busy with many locals and street food vendors.
Must Know | Travel Tips
- Be careful, as some vendors may approach you and try to sell you things.
- Consider a private Old and New Delhi Full or Half-Day Guided Tour by car for convenience.
- I was on a private tour with my tour guide and a driver, thankfully. It’s very convenient to get dropped off at the place by the driver, then I’ll be with my tour guide to see the landmarks. He will also be the one taking my photos. As an appreciation, I will just give him more tips after the tour ends.
- I read it’s best to visit in the evening when the monument is stunningly illuminated. So, perhaps, if you’re arriving on Day 1 in the evening on a private 5-day Golden Triangle Tour, you may want to quickly stop by here to see it.
What to eat in Delhi ~ Lunch at Suribachi

For lunch in Delhi, my tour guide took me to a nice-atmosphere restaurant called Suribachi. This was the first Indian restaurant I have eaten at as part of the Golden Triangle India Tour.
Good service and food as a first-timer! I particularly enjoyed the Kesar Rasmalai, the refreshing drinks, and the atmosphere! There were mostly foreigners here. My tour guide said he took me here since I asked him for a clean restroom and to try authentic quality Indian food.
My honest Indian food experience
Rasmalai became my favorite when I first tried it here! I recommend tasting it during your Golden Triangle India Tour, especially if you have a sweet tooth like me. It’s a classic South Asian dessert that is soft, airy, and spongy with fresh Indian cottage cheese patties soaked in a creamy, sweet, and aromatic milk sauce! It’s so delicious!
Try on traditional Indian dress + Souvenir Shopping
After lunch, my tour guide took me to a souvenir shop, where I got to try on traditional Indian clothing and watch how they make Indian carpets. Initially, I wanted to buy an Indian dress to wear at the Taj Mahal, but I realized the weather was going to be a bit chilly, especially in the morning. I wasn’t prepared. So, I only ended up buying a scarf.
I really appreciated the hospitality of the Indians. They’re very kind people. I was amazed at how they turned a brown silk blanket into a beautiful saree (or sari), a traditional Indian garment that can be worn as a dress! It’s truly fascinating to watch the transformation!
Qutub Minar
Next on the Delhi sightseeing tour you shouldn’t miss is a visit to Qutub Minara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s considered a unique example of Afghan architecture built with marble and red sandstone.
Did you know the world’s tallest brick minaret is here, Qutub Minar in New Delhi, India?
Enjoy admiring this remarkable monument with its intricate carvings of Indo-Islamic architecture and historic ruins. I appreciate how there were many corners and turns for photo opportunities in this place!
From what I remember, there were plenty of beautiful pathways to explore. For me, this is one of the best photo spots in Delhi where you can see and photograph interesting scenery!
I think it’s worth visiting if you’re planning your first trip to Delhi, so don’t miss it!

After the Delhi sightseeing, I was driven to Agra. I had a late dinner there and then checked in at Hotel Orange.

Wake up early for the Taj Mahal Tour this morning! See the beautiful Taj Mahal sunrise view!
I thought I was early, but there were already so many people there. So, it’s not uncommon to expect a crowd at sunrise, since many visitors travel to India to see this beautiful monument, one of the Seven Wonders of the World!
Golden Triangle India Tour
Note: It’s important to note that during my Golden Triangle India Tour, I had the same driver for the entire 5 days, but a different tour guide every day in a different place. So, I met my tour guide in Agra and explored the Taj Mahal with him.
When I finally saw the Taj Mahal in person, all my exhaustion from my long travels all the way from the U.S.A disappeared as I found it really worth traveling for! Wow! It’s massive and extremely captivating!
Dreaming of seeing the lasting symbol of love ~ Taj Mahal? A first-time trip to India is incomplete without a visit to the Taj Mahal! It’s India’s most famous landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Isn’t it admirable that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built it for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth? Thus, it’s a symbol of his deep love and grief. The construction took approximately 22 years to complete in 1653.
Admire the architectural beauty and unique design with fascinating symmetry, detailed carvings, and lovely marble inlay work that truly justify why the Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world!
Take time to appreciate the majestic architectural wonder in the world.

Taj Mahal Travel Tips | Must-Know
- Book tickets online in advance to skip the local ticket queue
- Always dress modestly.
- Taj Mahal is closed to tourists every Friday (reserved for prayers).
- Sunrise is the best time to visit (cool temperature, golden light)
- Must pass through thorough security screenings before entering
- Check the latest entry rules before your visit.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking.

My honest photographer experience at Taj Mahal
I hired a photographer at the Taj Mahal. The evening I arrived, I asked my tour guide if he knew a professional photographer. I later discovered that there were plenty of photographers available at the entrance and inside the Taj Mahal offering photography services.
Since I wanted quality professional photos taken, I considered it, thinking they would be professionally taken.
However, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t happy with the photos the photographer took, considering they’re expensive, at $200+. I honestly felt I was being scammed since the quality, lighting, and how they were taken were not even great for that price. I felt bad considering I took up the photographer’s time, so I negotiated and still paid.
Travel Tips | Caution
Based on my experience, I do not recommend hiring a photographer at the Taj Mahal unless you see their actual work first and have read/heard good reviews. Most especially, I don’t think it’s necessary if you already have a private tour guide at the Taj Mahal, as I did. Ironically, I found the photos my tour guide took were better than the ones I had to pay for.
If you plan to hire a photographer, look at your photos first each time he takes them.
Agra Fort
Next, visit Agra Fort, one of India’s finest Mughal forts, built in the 16th century on the banks of the Yamuna River. This massive red sandstone fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich history and magnificent Mughal architecture.
It’s interesting to learn about the fort’s fascinating history and see its grand palaces, courtyards, and impressive architecture!
Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and a portable pocket mini-fan.
Itmad-ud-Daulah
One unique thing to do in Agra is visiting Itmad-ud-Daulah, also known as Baby Taj. I learned it holds a special place in the chronicles of both history and architecture.
Did you know it’s the very first tomb in India made entirely of white marble? Like the Taj Mahal, admire the incredibly intricate inlay designs as the architecture overlooks the Yamuna River.
I found that the tomb has a quieter and less crowded ambience than the Taj Mahal. I recommend visiting before sunset for better lighting.
Mehtab Bagh
Want to see the best panoramic views of the Taj Mahal?
Explore a different perspective of the Taj Mahal during a visit to Mehtab Bagh, which is a series of 11 parks on the Yamuna’s east bank.
It’s the perfect spot to admire the beautiful monument away from the main crowds.
I recommend visiting at sunset with golden light. Unfortunately, it was gloomy when I went. It was still beautiful.
Enjoy the peaceful setting, lovely landscape, and quieter angle of the magnificent Taj Mahal! It may be the last time you’ll see it! I really took my time to take in the serene atmosphere and express my gratitude for being able to travel and experience such beautiful scenery even if solo. I’m so grateful for the kind of life I get to live. It’s more than I’ve ever planned and dreamed of!
After Agra sightseeing, my tour guide took me to souvenir shopping places.
Mistakes to avoid in India | Caution
Please be aware that you CAN say “no” if you don’t want to. Tour guides often try to convince you and take you to leather, jewelry, and marble shops since they get a commission if you shop there. I didn’t have any itinerary in the evening after the Agra sightseeing, so I agreed to go to souvenir shops.
My tour guide took me to a leather shop called Mehraz Indian Leather Development Centre. I sat on a comfortable couch while the staff brought in and showed me multiple leather bags and designs. I ended up buying 3 items (2 bags and 1 belt) for almost $500. Please note they’re good at convincing you to buy. I got them shipped to my U.S home since I had no space in my luggage. I honestly felt they were too expensive for buying genuine leather in India.
Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend buying leather in India due to poor durability. Perhaps it depends on where you buy.
Despite not getting great value for buying genuine leather, I didn’t regret buying marble jewelry in Agra, India. I found pieces I liked that were priced reasonably and that were long-lasting.
After souvenir shopping in Agra, I had a quick late dinner at Pinch of Spice. The restaurant was clean with a lovely atmosphere. I enjoyed my flavorful meal there, especially the Rasmalai and spring rolls that I ordered twice and took to-go.
DAY 4 India Travel: Golden Triangle Tour
Day 04: Agra – Jaipur

Fatehpur Sikr
For day 4 of the India travel itinerary, prepare for a journey to Jaipur with an en route visit to Fatehpur Sikri. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Admire the remarkably well-preserved historic architecture of palaces, courtyards, and mosques.
I particularly enjoyed taking photos here because of the pink-colored structure, which matched my dress by accident! I thought it looked better in photos!
Avoid Scams in India | Must-Know
Be mindful of the scams here. I later discovered guide/shrine attendants would redirect/initiate a blessing/charity with a special blanket cloth they say I can buy as a donation but will place there as a religious offering and perceived charity.
Although I was with my tour guide the whole time, agreeing to donate $100 using my credit card felt like a scam. In my mind, I thought I was helping in ways I could, and I hope my donated money is really going to those in need.
Expect a lot of walking. The top highlights to explore are the towering Buland Darwaza, the all-white marble tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, Jama Masjid, Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Panch Mahal, and Jodha Bai’s Palace.
I think it’s best to visit in the morning to avoid the heat.
After the morning sightseeing tour, I had a buffet lunch at Dharma Resorts near Agra from Fatehpur Sikri.
Next, the drive to Jaipur continued.
I checked in at my hotel in Jaipur, where I had dinner and rested in the evening.
DAY 5 India Travel: Golden Triangle Tour

Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds
On the last day of my 5-day Golden Triangle India Tour, the first stop is the beautiful Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds.
For me, besides the Taj Mahal, this is an absolute must-see and one of the best things to do in India when visiting for the first time!
Did you know this Palace of Winds was built so the royal ladies could watch street festivals and religious ceremonies without being seen? Interestingly, the palace was designed to allow air to move through while keeping the interior cooler!
If you’re looking for the most Instagrammable places in India, it’s Jaipur! Don’t miss seeing this lovely pink city and photographing the sandstone façade with beautifully carved windows (jharokhas). I honestly felt like I was in a fairytale seeing it in person!
Must-Know | Travel Tips
- Visit early in the morning for the best lighting and fewer crowds since it’s one of the most photographed landmarks in Rajasthan.
- Go to the cafe across the street. Spend some time upstairs for the view and photo opportunities!
Amber Fort
For a more ethical visit, please consider taking a jeep or walking up to the fort instead of riding an elephant.
Amber Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on a hill built in the 16th century, famous for its grand Rajput architecture and surrounding scenery.
Elephant Ride as part of the Golden Triangle India Tour Package~ (please make informed decision)
My honest elephant experiences:
Please forgive me for the lack of awareness about the negative impact of riding an elephant. I’ll be honest ~ I feel ashamed as I share this experience here on my India travel blog. However, I wanted to be honest and share this to raise awareness because I didn’t realize at the time that activities like this could contribute to the long-term suffering of these gentle giants and increase their risk of extinction.
It wasn’t until I went on an elephant ride in India as part of my tour package that I realized the terrible reality and consequences of these elephant activities. At that time, I saw elephants looking very unhealthy, with visible wounds, which made me apprehensive and uneasy about riding them.
Even though I was hesitant, I went along with it and followed what everyone else was doing there, riding the elephants and taking photos. My conscience kept bothering me after my trip to India, which led me to research and look up facts about elephants, and that’s when I became aware and realized the harm these activities can cause. I felt deeply guilty and ashamed for unknowingly participating in it.
What I learned from this experience…
“We can enjoy seeing animals without causing them harm.”
Travelers can choose unforgettable travel experiences that don’t have to come at the expense of animals. I learned elephant rides can cause lasting harm to the elephants’ well-being, and I hope this encourages others to choose ethical wildlife experiences instead.
Amber Fort Jaipur Photos
Amber Fort is worth visiting! There are lots of architectural features, floral murals, and intricate designs and patterns to see, appreciate, and take photos of!
Plan to spend two or three hours exploring the fortress and many beautifully decorated palaces, lovely courtyards, the dazzling Mirror Palace, and more!
I really enjoyed exploring the historical Amber Fort in Jaipur! This 16th-century masterpiece of Rajput architecture has plenty of photo opportunities!
Visit early if you can to avoid the heat and crowds.
If you travel for unique and intricate architecture and travel photography, it’s a must-add to your India Travel itinerary! Exploring Jaipur almost felt like being in an ancient fairy-tale-like movie scene!

City Palace
Enjoy admiring historic landmarks and royal residence here!
One of the famous places in Jaipur that a first-time visitor shouldn’t miss is the City Palace, especially if you’re fond of seeing richly designed and intricate artwork and beautifully preserved royal palaces!
If you’re interested in elegant architecture and colorful photography, City Palace is for you!
The main attractions that first-time visitors shouldn’t miss: Peacock Gate, Chandra Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Armoury Museum, Baggi Khana (Carriage Museum), Palace Courtyards.
Did you know that the City Palace is a unique blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architecture? During your tour, you’ll learn from your guide that the Jaipur royal family still resides in the City Palace.
Enjoy learning about the royal history and wandering through the elegant courtyards, stunningly carved doorways, vibrantly decorated halls, and the fascinating scenery.
City Palace Gates
I was a bit surprised when visiting the City Palace. It’s not like what I expected initially.
The famous inner doorways known as the most photographed decorated gates were underwhelming in person (at first based on my experience) compared to when taken and viewed in photos!
However, the details were still very beautiful when admired closely!
The City Palace was my favorite tour in Jaipur!
At every corner and every turn, I found the palace distinctively photogenic! I enjoyed my experience so much that I felt like being in a royal-princess-themed movie and experiencing the palace in a modern world rather than just visiting a historical place as a tourist!
If you travel for photos, there are plenty of photo opportunities you’ll appreciate! 🙂
Surprisingly, I didn’t know how large and elegant the palace complex was until I visited! So, wear comfortable shoes and a pretty dress! Take time to soak in and admire the lovely courtyards, archways, balconies, and gardens as you explore!

City Palace Travel Tips
- The palace is larger than I thought! Wear comfortable shoes!
- Bring a mini travel fan as it gets really hot!
- Visit in the morning if you prefer cooler weather and fewer people.
- Consider buying the premium ticket to access inside Chandra Mahal!
- (so luxurious and grand interiors) WORTH-IT!
- Expect to spend 2–3 hours or more if you like taking photos.
Jantar Mantar
The stargazing observatory of Jantar Mantar was skipped due to time. It was on my original Golden Triangle India Tour itinerary. Instead, I requested and visited Panna Meena Ka Kund and Albert Hall Museum, which I’ll share here!
If you plan to visit Jantar Mantar, it’s one of the world’s best-preserved astronomical observatories, built by astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
I think it’s worth visiting if you have more time in Jaipur, especially if you’re interested in astronomy! Did you know its most popular instrument, the Samrat Yantra, is the world’s largest stone sundial and can tell time with precision?
Save time and schedule your visit with the nearby City Palace and Hawa Mahal, all within walking distance of each other.
Panna Meena Ka Kund
It appeared interesting on Google based on published photos, but when I visited, this was how it looked! Hopefully, when you visit India, it’s cleaner!
I still appreciated it and took photos because it’s a historic and unique stepwell! Notice the striking geometric staircases and symmetrical design! This was how the locals used to collect water, socialize, and avoid the heat.
According to my tour guide, they used to allow tourists to go down the stairs, but not anymore due to past accidents, risk of falling, and to help preserve the historic site.
Albert Hall Museum
Did you know Albert Hall Museum is Rajasthan’s oldest museum and houses an Egyptian mummy that attracts visitors?
The museum is known for its collection of ancient sculptures, paintings, carpets, pottery, textiles, jewelry, and Egyptian antiquities.
Jaipur Travel Tips
If you plan to visit Albert Hall Museum, I recommend visiting before sunset, so you can take photos of the unique architecture both during daylight and in the evening when it’s beautifully illuminated!
